There are many beautiful countries on the planet, countries with a long history and tradition, countries with unique natural landscapes. However, if you’re looking for a country that offers you the chance to experience a different way of life and thinking, Cuba should definitely be on your travel list. Cuba boasts stunning natural landscapes, excellent beaches, beautiful cities reflecting the country’s colonial history, a deep love for music, and very friendly locals. Cuba is its people, its culture, its music, cigars, and rum. It’s a destination worth discovering, dedicating time to, and it won’t disappoint you. We visited Cuba at the end of October 2024, we spent an unforgettable week, and we assure you that Cuba is a destination for everyone. In this article, we present some of the reasons why we loved Cuba, and we hope to encourage you to visit this unique country as well.

4 Reasons Why You Will Love Cuba
Beautiful Cities with a Colonial Aroma
Cuba was a Spanish colony for many years, reflected in the architecture of several cities like Havana, Trinidad, and Cienfuegos, all of which are UNESCO World Heritage Sites.
In Havana’s historic center, you can admire landmarks such as the Cathedral, the Plaza de Armas, the Old Square, the fortress housing the War Museum, the El Morro and Cabana fortresses, the Fine Arts Museum, the Museum of the Revolution, and the iconic Obispo Street. Get lost in the small, music-filled streets of Old Havana.
Just outside the historic center, walk along the Avenida de Martí where you’ll find the impressive Capitol building, one of the city’s most popular attractions, and the Havana Theater. Take a taxi or the characteristic American cars from the 1950s (an interesting experience but perhaps a bit of a tourist trap) to the Plaza de la Revolución, where you’ll find metal portraits of the country’s national heroes, José Martí and the great Argentine revolutionary Che Guevara. Continue to the Malecón, Havana’s most iconic boulevard, where you’ll see the famous National Hotel of Havana, observe many old and abandoned buildings, and relax walking by the sea.
In the southern part of Cuba, there are two more cities worth visiting: Trinidad and Cienfuegos. Trinidad is known for its cobblestone streets, colorful small houses, and the impressive central square. It’s a beautiful city that deserves your time. In Cienfuegos, which has a French flair, walk along the Malecón, lined with cafés and restaurants, and enjoy the central José Martí Square.

The Natural Beauty of Cuba
The natural beauty of Cuba is undeniable. From the vast, exotic beaches with white sand and crystal-clear waters to areas with tropical forests, mountains, and waterfalls.
Viñales is one of the most enchanting places in Cuba, known for its stunning natural beauty and is a UNESCO World Heritage Site. The Viñales Valley, with its characteristic circular hills called “mogotes” and lush countryside, creates a landscape that looks like a painting. The tobacco and coffee plantations, along with traditional houses, offer a sense of tranquility and authenticity that is rare to find in other areas. You can learn about the tobacco production process, buy cigars directly from the producers (expect to pay around 80 euros for a pack of 20 cigars), as well as other products such as coffee and honey. Additionally, the area is perfect for hiking and outdoor activities such as horse riding, perhaps the ideal way to explore the region. Viñales is a peaceful oasis that offers something for everyone – from natural beauty to cultural experiences. Try to find accommodation with a view of the Viñales hills for an unforgettable experience.
In Cuba, you’ll also find many waterfalls, such as the El Nicho waterfall, one of the most impressive in Cuba, located in the Cienfuegos province. El Nicho is a beautiful natural landscape that also includes turquoise-blue pools and dense tropical forests. The entrance fee is around 10 euros. To reach the main waterfall, you’ll follow trails through the forest (about 20 to 30 minutes from the parking area). Swim in the natural, cool pools that form near the waterfalls and enjoy the breathtaking view from the surrounding hills. Another area with waterfalls, ideal for hiking, is Soroa, located between Havana and Viñales.

The Exotic and Pristine Caribbean Beaches
Cuba is one of the countries in the Caribbean, and one of the first things that comes to mind when hearing about the Caribbean is its exotic beaches. Cuba is no exception. Along the island and in the surrounding islands that form part of the Cuban archipelago, there are beautiful beaches to choose from.
The vast beach in Varadero is a great option for your first swim in Cuba. The waters are clear, beach access is free, and the almost white sand adds a special touch. However, it’s worth noting that Varadero is a popular tourist resort with large hotel complexes, tourist shops, and restaurants. Aside from the beach, there aren’t many reasons to spend a lot of time in the town. It’s better to stay in other areas of Cuba for a more authentic Cuban experience.
If Havana is your base and you don’t have much time to visit many beaches, no problem. A few kilometers east of the city is Santa María del Mar beach, which is preferred by locals. It’s a large, clean, sandy beach with palm trees along the shore. Entry is free and you can reach the beach from Havana by taxi or your own car.
In the southern part of the country, you’ll find Pig Beach, a small cove with several beaches. We particularly liked the Cueva de los Pescos (Cave of the Fishes), a small rocky beach with deep blue waters, perfect for fish watching in various sizes and colors. The beach is not organized and entry is free. Don’t forget to bring snorkeling goggles to enjoy the underwater world and the fish. If you’re looking for an organized beach, just 6 kilometers south of the Cave of the Fishes, you’ll find Punta Perdiz beach, with an entry fee of 15 euros, which includes lunch, drinks, beach chairs, and an umbrella.

Its Culture, An Authentic Life Experience
Cuba’s culture is rich, blending African and Spanish heritage with modern influences. It’s a mix of traditions, art, music, and dance that reflects Cuba’s history and strong identity. Cuba is known for its vibrant energy, making it a unique destination. Music and dance, like Salsa and Rumba, are an integral part of Cuban culture. The neighborhoods and bustling squares, especially in Old Havana, come alive to the rhythm of music.
The people in Cuba are especially welcoming, so don’t miss the chance to stay in local homes (casas particulares). You’ll get to try delicious traditional Cuban food (pork, rice, avocado, beans, and fruits like pineapple and guava) and interact with friendly locals who will help you with anything you need. Don’t be surprised if a local asks you for a cookie or some chocolate in the street and be sure to try the delicious Cuban lemonades.
The overall experience in Cuba will remain unforgettable. Whatever you’ve heard or imagined about Cuba, it should not stop you from traveling to this special, authentic, and unique country in the Caribbean. There may be issues with electricity or shortages of some goods, but what you’ll experience in proud Cuba is a life-changing experience you’ll remember forever.
